“Final Tooth Ceremony “
In Taiwan, most of the company will hold a large and formal banquet for their staff by the end of the year. Very often, they will also hire a stage performance to entertain their people. The boss will also give red envelope or the lottery prize as rewards for their hardworking. This banquet got a strange name”Final Tooth Ceremony”.
Where does this name come from?
Long time ago, before military goes to war, they pray to god with their flag, wish they can defeat their enemy on the battlefield. The ancient flag was often decorated with ivory, which is elephant tooth. So they call it “Tooth Ceremony “.
Business competition is like a battlefield for business man. And most of the business man also regularly worship to God of earth, who is believed to offer good luck and protection to people in the folk religion. The two traditions gradually become one. Twice a month, on the second day and sixteenth day of every month based on Chinese Calendar, such ceremony will be hold. 16th of December is the last one throughout the year, so it become special.
The boss will take the chance to show his gratitude to the contribution of their staff. So they will make it bigger than others.
Amongst all the joy the occasion has, there is also a cruel tradition. If the boss want to let go of someone, they will make the beak of chicken pointing to that person during the banquet. The chicken therefore got a name”merciless chicken”.
The tradition was very common in Taiwan, Hongkong, Macau, and Province of Fujian in China. However after the cultural revolution, China part has lost their tradition, but it’s still very common in other area.
